Recently we’ve ventured away from residential design discussions and more towards commercial conversations. We gave coffee shops their moment in the design spotlight and so today we’ll be shining a light on restaurants.

So if you’re a restaurant owner now or plan on becoming one in the near future you’re going to want to keep reading.

Today we’ll be going back to the basics by taking a look at five essential design features that need to be present in any restaurant. Let’s dig in!

1. Eye-catching Signage

We’ve spoken before about how awesome glass sign boards are and we’re still singing the same tune. One of the most important factors of running a successful restaurant is attracting patrons. As such, any restaurant worth the name needs to boast attractive signage. It should fit the style you want to convey about your restaurant, and have clear writing so people can see it from far away.

2. Interesting Lighting

The lighting in a restaurant has the ability to set the overall tone for the restaurant. Do you want your patrons to feel bright and cheery? Then opt for lights that speak to this. Or do you want your restaurant to foster an air of romance? Then dim and dusky will be the way to go. You can set different types of lighting for different dining areas — a dim and dusky bar area and a bright and cheery general seating area for families and groups.

3. Comfortable Seating Options

The beauty of commercial restaurant chairs is that, more often than not, they’re extremely comfortable. The fact of the matter is that restaurant chairs need to encourage their patrons to spend more time—and money—in them.

It’s a good idea to offer different seating options for the different types of people that will come to your restaurant. Bars with comfortable stools are great for busy business people who want a quick bite while booths are perfect for couples and bigger tables are ideal for families.

4. A Focal Feature

Every restaurant needs a focal feature to excite the eyes of its patrons. Not only does a focal feature get your patrons excited about more than just the menu but it presents the perfect #instagrammoment.

How handy would it be for your social media marketing campaign if your focal feature organically pops up in Instagram posts all over? The focal point of your restaurant can be anything you choose whether it’s a handcrafted wooden bar, a unique mural on the ceiling or even a simple feature wall.

5. Terrific Tables

There’s nothing quite as annoying as trying to dig into your meal with your elbows practically pushed together. That’s why it’s a non-negotiable to pick tables that are as practical as they are pretty.

The tables in your restaurant need to be spacious enough that your patrons can comfortably enjoy their meal. On top of this, opt for a table that is made from easy to clean material so that you can minimize the cleaning time in between patrons.

Final Thoughts

If your restaurant is missing out on any of these essential design features, it’s officially time to revert back to the drawing board and head out to your nearest furniture store or interior designer’s office.
