The space you study in more often than not influences whether you study effectively and efficiently. A room that will motivate you to study should be one where it’s easy to concentrate – this doesn’t mean that it should be absolutely quiet, but that it should be relaxing and should fit your style and personality.

Where you study should reflect how you study, so you should try decorating your study room according to the way you study. When a room is furnished based on your taste and decorated with the help of study room decorating ideas it gives you a relaxing atmosphere where you can be very productive.

Who You Are and What You Prefer

When I find myself wondering how to decorate my study room I always start by making a list of the things I like. You need to ask yourself questions for the best results.

How do you feel about different kinds of distractions? Do you prefer taking short breaks while working or do you want to quietly sit for a longer period of time?

Try analyzing yourself and how you react to certain atmospheres in order to know yourself and what you prefer best. Take comfort for example; finding a chair and desk that are comfortable, but not too comfortable is crucial to having productive study time – you don’t want to fall asleep or let your mind drift.

You also need to give yourself enough workspace so you don’t feel cramped up in your work.

  • The top of your desk or table should be at a height that’s between your waist and ribcage when you sit – this will allow your elbows to ideally rest on the table or desk. You shouldn’t have to hunch your shoulders forward or not have your feet touch the ground at an appropriate height.
  • The chair you choose should be comfortable, interesting, and it should match the height of the desk or table you’ve chosen. You may easily get distracted by a chair that rotates, rolls or lifts, so choosing a plain and simple design for your chair will help you in the long run.

If you need to use a computer when working, then you need to create a distance between you and the computer which is approximately one and a half to two and a half feet.

A Personalized Cork Board

You can get cork in order to create your very own cork board or cork wall as today you can easily find and buy cork in rolls or tiles.

Attaching the cork to the wall is easy and simple – just use glue. Aside from being appealing, cork also muffles sound – that’s why it’s useful when making music rooms.

Adequate Lighting

Lighting is crucial when it comes to achieving the right results – a dark room can make you sleepy as well as worsen an eye strain that can ruin the whole atmosphere.

But no need to go in the opposite direction – severe light like fluorescent can also do damage to the eyes. Another thing about lighting is that you should focus it – you can focus the light to your desk with a desk lamp, or you can use overhead light to light up the whole area.

Natural light is good for the daytime, but may become a distraction at times, so putting draperies or blinds is a good idea.

Gather the Materials

You should keep your entire material close so you can easily find them when you need them. It’s all about organizing. School supplies (like pencils, paper, erasers etc.) should all have their own place, whether in the drawer or on the desk.

Aside from the supplies, having a dictionary and calculator may be useful, even though with today’s phones you won’t need them. You can use your phone for many things, but the risk of using it is getting distracted by something else.

Organize!

The desk drawers in your room aren’t for nothing – placing your items there is the best way to clear out your desktop. If you don’t have enough, or if they’re not enough then you can always go with a different alternative: crates, boxes etc.

You can take these decorative crates and boxes and stack them on the desktop. These will allow you to better organize your things and study materials. Marking your boxes or crates will help you better find everything’s place.

Use the Space Only For Studying

If your study space is your bed, you’ll be more tempted to think of (or actually) sleep. It it’s where you play computer games, gaming; the dining room table, eating; and so on.

You’ll be more likely to create distracting associations. If it is possible for you to carve out a space — even a corner, a niche, a large closet, etc. — dedicated exclusively to studying, do it. Associate your presence there only with studying.

If this is not an option, do what you can to transform the multipurpose space into study space. Clear away food, dishes, centerpieces, etc., from the dining room table. Put away your computer games, scrapbooking supplies, and so on.

Easily Distracted?

If you have the common problem of being easily distracted then making the space look cleaner and tidier is what you should be aiming for.

Choose a minimalistic design – this can be achieved with a smooth glass table that widens the space and keeping only the most important items on it. You can add an interesting attention-grabbing chair to the mix – give your room a touch of your personal style.

Experiment with Colors

Colors help enhance creativity, that’s why they’re often used and experimented with when decorating children’s study rooms. It can apply to everyone, not just children.

Use all kinds of colors on your study – you can try coloring your desk and chair bright and combine them with eye-catching wallpaper. A mix of lively colors is what keeps the brain going!

An Adventurer

Do you have an explorer’s itch? Then giving your walls a gray color can create a space fit for an adventurer. Finish it off wish shiny silver and the room will flourish with style and personality.

This setting works well with dark wooden floors and a metal table. Along with your possessions and decorations, the room will have an interesting theme.

Motivation and Decoration

Putting lots of personalized items like signs, photos and posters will give your room the splash of personality it needs, but is that a good step? You should check whether the things you put in your room really motivate you in the long run.

You should let your walls motivate you – choose a picture of something you strive to achieve or maybe a picture of your family.

For some, motivation may be looking at failed exams and poor scores as it gives them a will to improve. Some people need a push, as opposed to those who need a pull – find out which one you are.

Don’t Overdo It

The goal of a study space is to enhance your study performance. If you pay too much attention to beautifying the place instead of the studying itself, you may be doing yourself quite the opposite of a favor.

Don’t spend your study time making a space where there are no distractions because that space may end up being the distraction in the end.

A couple of tips:

  • Your room should have good ventilation.
  • Let in some natural light through your window during daytime.
  • Light pastel colors for the walls create a calming and homey atmosphere.
  • Full-spectrum lighting or just a reading lamp can be just enough for the nighttime.
  • Keep your study table tidy by only keeping textbooks, exercise books, notebooks, dictionaries and other static items on it. Leave no room for clutter.
  • The brain performance is at its highest when the temperature is 19 degrees Celsius.
  • Freshen up the ambient by adding a couple of plants. You can’t miss with greenery.
  • It’s nice to have your goals, objectives and any kinds of motivating charts on your walls. You can also include schedules, calendars, exam dates etc.
