Many people like playing tennis, but are deterred from enjoying the sport because purchasing a ping pong is expensive.

Thankfully, building a ping pong table from scratch is not only less costly than buying a new one, but it also offers satisfaction to the player.

Considering that most of the materials one requires can be found in a local store, you would not have a reason for not building a folding ping pong table.

Why you should build a custom ping pong table

  • You get to include the features you desire; thus enhancing your table tennis game experience
  • You will experience the satisfaction of a job well done, as well as you are keen on the details and take time to do a good job
  • You will save money buying the materials and making the table compared to buying a finished one. When buying a new one, how much money does this cost? Usually, costs a few dollars more.
  • You gain bragging rights among your friends

The entire process of constructing the table is interesting. Just like any other DIY project, you should put your safety first. While at it, here are the steps to follow for a successful project.

1.     Get everything you need

Here are the materials required for a standard foldable ping pong table. You should note that the needs might change depending on the size and type of table that you desire.

  • Two 2×2 lumber pieces, measuring nine feet
  • Plywood
  • Four 2×2 lumber pieces, measuring five feet
  • Circular saw
  • Four pieces of door hinges
  • Screws
  • Masking tape
  • Screwdrivers (or drill)
  • Wood glue
  • Two solid pressed wooden pieces measuring 4 1/2 by five feet, half an inch thick.
  • Clamps
  • Six-inch-tall net (with a mounting kit)
  • Paint roller
  • Paint
  • Detail paint brush

2.     Lay down the base

Divide two lumber pieces measuring nine feet in half and lay the two pieces from an end to the other. They should form the sides of the rectangle, both of which should be 4.5 feet long. Cut the five-foot lumber pieces in the same way to form a complete rectangle. The rectangle will serve as the base of your ping pong table.

3.     Make the legs and attach them

Every leg of the ping pong table should be 29 and half inches tall. Therefore, you can cut the two by two lumber pieces into four pieces, each of which measures 291/2 inches.

If you are great at woodwork, you can carve some elaborate designs on the wood to add to the beauty of the piece. If you are not good at woodwork, it is okay to add plain pieces on the base you have created.

Attach the four legs to every corner of the base using screws or nails. The choice is majorly a matter of preference. However, although many people prefer using nails, screws tend to hold on for a long period.

4.     Add the hinges

The essence of making this ping pong table is to have a foldable one that you can put away when it is not in use. So, the next step is to add the hinges as they are responsible for ensuring that you can fold the table.

Ensure that the hinges are in equal distances on the lower side. Use them to connect the pressed wood pieces that are 41/2 feet long. Screw the hinges to the lower side of the pieces carefully, and then attach them to the rectangular base you made earlier.

5.     Add plywood

The plywood is added to the wooden surface to enhance its buoyancy and to coat the nails that might be showing upon attaching the hinges and legs. Remember that the essence of playing table tennis is the ball bouncing, which means the plywood plays a critical role.

The International regulations for table tennis require a bounce of 8 3/4 inches. To achieve this, take enough glue and add it to the two wooden pieces. Next, place the plywood sheets on the surface and then attach the clamps to keep the parts together as you allow sufficient time for the glue to dry.

6.     Finishing touches – Paint the table and add a net

The regular ping pong tables are painted green. However, since this one is custom, you are at liberty to use the color you wish. A paint roller is better than a brush because it will give a solid color and will ensure uniformity throughout the surface.

As for the lines, consider using white paint. However, feel free to use any other color. Clean the lines using masking tape. Allow some time for the paint to dry. After that, you can add a six-inch net to complete the look.

Finally, you can buy a ball and some paddles, and then enjoy playing table tennis with your custom made ping pong table. Hope you had fun following this guide.
