Carpenters play an inevitable role in decorating the interiors of our houses with furniture. In carpentry, the basic technique to fix pieces of woods is called dovetail joint. The basic function of such joints is the resistance they give from being pulled apart. This technique hailed from the past, and today, it becomes one of the favorite techniques of work of carpenters.

With the advancement of carpentry tools, a device named dovetail jigs is also invented, which holds the timber vertically to cut dovetail joints with a router. You can shop best dovetail jigs from various online shopping sites.

Now let us understand the way of making dovetail joints.

Make all the arrangements you need:

To do any kind of carpentry work, it is always helpful to keep every requirement and tool at your arm’s length. So collect your tools and keep it systematically on a table where you will work.

The basic needs are wood blocks (5-inch x 3-inch x 3-inch), pencil for important markings, a coping saw, a backsaw, two or three chisels as much you want, a mallet, and a hammer. Now, if you want to make more fixtures, you can use more tools and raw materials. And keep the area of work clean.

Measure and mark necessary markings on the woods:

Next, you have to do precise measurements of pins and tails. It is an integral part of dovetail making, and laying down the measurements is very tricky. You can begin with the wood piece on which you want to make the pins.

Taking a measurement of 10 mm from both sides of the wood, you can find the center easily. Then make three equal-sized pin markings. Then do the same thing with the wooden piece on which you want to make tails.

Cut the pins and tails according to the markings:

Now comes the cutting part. Take your saw, chisel, and hammer and start cutting the pins and tails according to the markings you made. Take the pinned wood and attach it to the dovetail jig.

Now cut out the pins, and while cutting, just follow the reflection in the saw to make sure of getting a square interface. Now do the same with the tail wood. After doing both, you can see the fitting of both by joining together, and if you see that anyone of it needs more precision, you can use your chisel and hammer and make certain changes.

Remove the pin and tail waste:

The space between the two pins and two tails can be made by backsaw. Apparently, lots of wastes will come out. You can remove the wastes by using a coping saw.

The pin wastes are removed by rotating the wood 90 degrees and cut down the depth line so that the external pieces of outside edges will be removed. The tail wastes can also be removed by the same method. After removing the wastes, you should check the fittings of pins and tails for any further changes if needed.

Make the final fittings:

In most cases, you will see that the dovetails do not fit perfectly. In some places, they
are tight, and in some places, they are loose. Well, you should use a chisel and slowly remove the excess part from pins or tails.

But remember not to remove material from edges. Even it is preferable to remove materials from both pins and tails. Now fit the joints, and your dovetail will complete.

Always remember, carpentry is all about practice. You cannot become an expert overnight. Similarly, dovetail making also cannot be mastered in one day. In preliminary days, you will make many mistakes, and lots of imperfections will arise, but you will be an expert if you do practice.
