Nothing beats the tweed chesterfield sofa if you value style and substance. Try it, sit on it, and you’ll love it.

Aside from its superb design that lights up any room with a vintage personality, the wool fabric adds a warm, comfortable, and relaxing experience to the sofa.

The colour and texture of the fabric make the sofa a magical wand that transforms any room (whether it’s your office or sitting room) into a work of art. In other words, the tweed sofa blends perfectly with any room design. So, how is the sofa made?

The Process Of Making Tweed Sofas

There are six stages for making a tweed chesterfield sofa;

  • Wood selection
  • Frame set up
  • Foam installation
  • Upholstery
  • The seating system
  • Polishing

Wood Selection

The quality of the sofa finds its root in the material selection. Only the best is taken.

Every chesterfield sofa is built with seasoned beech hardwood, such as oak. The straight-grained hardwood is the best choice since it’s more sturdy (able to withstand intense pressure) than softwood and long-lasting. In terms of figures, the sofa can last more than ten years.

Setting The Frame

After selecting the wood, the next step is drawing the blueprint and cutting the wood into the desired size and shapes needed to make the frame.

Next, fitting the wood parts. In order to make a solid frame, the dowel joinery technique is used to join the parts together and then strengthen them with screws to improve the frame’s integrity. The technique makes the frame more sturdy than staples and glue.

After the frame is complete, the next step is drilling the knitting holes before moving to the next stage, the foam installation stage. The holes are essential during the upholstery stage; it’s where the knitting needle will pass through.

Foam Installation

Support straps are fitted on the back and the arm sides of the frame, where the premium foam will be fitted. The straps are made from an elastic material, suitable for damping force and improving lumber comfort.

The next step is overlaying the frame with a light fabric cloth to protect the foam from accumulating dirt. The chesterfield sofas are built with only premium and tested foam to maintain quality and durability. This much input in quality and standard ensures you get the absolute best and most cosy experience.

The foam is first cut and trimmed into fitting sizes before nailing it to the frame.

After installing the foam on the backrest, the crest rail, and the arms, the next step is drilling the holes. Remember the holes on the frame? Those holes are extended through the foam, and more are made for upholstering the wool fabric.

The distance between the holes and their arrangement is functional in preserving the aesthetic beauty of the sofa. The holes determine the tufting pattern of the seat. For example, with medium or large-sized diamond patterns, most clients prefer 6-inch tufting, while some prefer the 11-inch tufting pattern.

Upholstery

The fabric is 100% wool from the Scottish Blackface and Cheviot sheep for the tweed chesterfield sofa. Before receiving the Orb mark logo, every fabric undergoes a quality check to ensure it’s;

  • Durable
  • Fire-resistant
  • Water-resistant, and
  • Mould resistant.

Upholstering the wool fabric is the most sensitive stage of building a chesterfield sofa. The process requires maintaining consistent stretching on the fabric and, at the same time, maintaining the patterned tufting.

The tool needed for the job is a long needle, buttons, and a strong thread to keep the fabric in place. The upholstering process starts at the base of the backrest to the back of the crest rail and extends to both sides of the arm. The seating area doesn’t need tufting if cushions are used.

The wool fabric is first sewn with a more rigid material for the back and the arm sides before fitting it to the frame with nails. The extra material makes the fabric more sturdy.

The Seating System

The seating system will depend on customer references. Some prefer the cushioned type, others the spiral spring fitted type or the serpentine spring seat.

For the cushioned seating area, elastic support liners or serpentine springs are fitted to the sofa. A light fabric cloth that matches the seat is laid over the liners or the springs to conceal them. What’s left is the cushions, which are also covered with wool fabric.

The spring system is permanently fitted to the seat’s frame for the spiral spring sofa. Soft rebound materials are used to fill the spring system and then covered with wool fabric.

Polishing

It’s only the leather chesterfield sofa that needs much polishing. The tweed sofa only needs dusting after inspection for the seat to be ready.

Conclusion

A two-seater tweed chesterfield sofa with a height of 2.3 ft, a width of 4.9 ft, and a depth of 2.62 ft has a weight of approximately 92.59 lbs.
