According to one recent study, approximately 50 million adults in the United States suffer from one of over 80 different sleeping disorders on a nightly basis. Between 20 and 30 million other people also say that they suffer from intermittent sleeping issues at some point throughout the year.

This is an issue that is compounded by the fact that adults between the ages of 18 and 64 are recommended to get at least seven hours of sleep per night. Even teenagers between the ages of 14 and 17 should get between eight and 10 hours per night. But how, exactly, are they supposed to do that when their mattresses don’t supply them the support they need to not only get to sleep at the end of the day, but stay that way for as long as possible?

This, in essence, is why sustainable mattresses are so important. They’re not just an investment in a good night’s sleep. They’re an investment in your health and well-being as well.

But at the same time, there are a number of myths that persist about luxury mattresses that cause people to see them as less valuable than they really are. Thankfully, shattering these myths is easy – you just need to keep a few key things in mind.

Mattress Myths: Breaking Things Down

By far, the biggest myth about luxury mattresses is that if you have a bad back, you need a harder mattress to give you the support necessary to sleep through the night.

In reality, this couldn’t be farther from the truth. When you lay down at night on a very firm mattress, the curve of your back actually goes unsupported. To that extent, it’s no different from slipping on an older pair of shoes that does little to support the arch of your foot as you walk.

When you lay down on a firm mattress, it may support your hips and the lower part of your body – but it’s your spine that is totally unprotected. This puts an unnecessary amount of pressure on your vertebrae, which can only exacerbate your back pain, rather than do anything to properly relieve it.

Luxury mattresses are worth the investment because they support your entire body – from your feet to your hips to the small of your back and beyond. This is what allows you to get comfortable to fall asleep, and this is what supports you as you continue to move and roll over throughout the night.

Another major myth about luxury mattresses is that, because they’re made with a higher quality material than alternatives, they’re either difficult or outright impossible to clean. This, too, is false. All mattresses can be cleaned – it’s just that the methods you’ll need to use will obviously vary depending on exactly what type of mattress you’re talking about.

Sometimes you can use even a regular vacuum to clean your mattress, for example. Not only will this remove all the dirt and dust that accumulates over time, but it will also keep the original shape of the mattress to make sure it remains comfortable to lay on. In other situations, you’ll need to use a steam cleaner – which itself comes with its own special set of rules. Because a steam cleaner will obviously leave a mattress damp, you’ll want to use one long before you think about laying down and heading to bed for the night. You need to give it time to properly air dry. The added benefit here is that this will also absorb any spills that you may have experienced over time.

Finally, maybe the biggest myth about luxury mattresses is that you’ll somehow be able to find a single mattress that equally suits both you and your partner.

One of the most important things to understand is that no two sleepers are created in quite the same way. Some people roll around all throughout the night, while others stay in relatively the same position. Likewise, the support a 130 pound woman would need to get comfortable will obviously differ from a man that weighs 195 pounds sleeping next to her.

This is why oftentimes luxury mattresses will offer differing levels of support depending on which side of the bed you’re sleeping on. Memory foam mattresses are particularly good for this, as they tend to vary in support depending on the pressure and the body heat of the individual person. Over time, each half of the mattress will essentially conform to the properties of the person sleeping on it – thus offering a single solution that best suits the needs of both partners.

In the end, luxury mattresses are an investment well worth making for the positive impact they can have on both your short-term ability to sleep and in regard to your long-term health. You simply need to understand the difference between fact and fiction, which will allow you to purchase a mattress that best meets your needs moving forward.
