Buying a new bed frame may not be high on your list of priorities when you are looking to buy a new bed. The mattress is the most important thing that you need to purchase, but the bed frame comes in at a very close second. Without the proper frame, your expensive mattress will not be as comfortable as it was designed to be. Remember that statistics show that we spend around one third of our lives sleeping, so when choosing a new set we must pick by judging the looks and testing the comfort.

Once you have spent the time, and money, on a new mattress you need to spend a few moments matching the frame to the bed. The old school metal frames that folded out and extended to fit most sizes is a thing of the past for most consumers today. Let’s dig a little deeper and find out how you can pick the perfect bed frame to go along with the best mattress.

  • Room: You have probably already considered the size of your bed when you bought the mattress, but you need to think about it one more time. You will not want to pay for a frame that has drawers underneath if you only have a foot or so on each side. Which, by the way, you should try and leave three feet of room if possible. If this means that you need to buy a smaller bed than what you were considering, you will have to consider what is more important to you, size, or space.
  • Size: One of the biggest things that you need to take into account is the size of the mattress. Just because it says King on the tag does not mean that it is an average size. A California King is longer at the foot of the mattress, but smaller in width. You must know the exact size of the bed to be able to match the correct dimension for the right bed
  • Support type: There are basically two types of support available. The basic frame requires a box spring to be added between the mattress and the frame. A platform frame, on the other hand, offers the support needed to allow you to remove the box spring and just use a mattress. A platform bed usually makes you closer to the ground because of the design, but you can have a frame special made to give you more height.
  • Frame construction: Frames can be produced as a set, or as separate items that can be hooked together. Many wooden bed frames will come with a head and foot board. Metal frames come as separate pieces and must have added on head and foot boards if you want them included.
  • Legs: You will need to check out the legs of the frame that you are thinking about getting. Fine wood floors can be damaged by bed frame feet that are not protected with cloth or rubber ends. Some beds have wheels installed on the ends to offer ease of movement when needed.
  • Materials: The two main types of materials used for bed frames are wood and metal. Both have their advantages, and both can have unique styles and decorations.

When it comes down to it choosing the perfect bed frame begins with evaluating yourself and your specific needs. If you are country at heart a wood frame would be more your style, but if you are city through and through a simple metal frame may be more to your liking.

Whichever material you decide to go for, and whatever design you prefer, can make a huge difference when buying a frame. It is not a task that should be taken lightly because the frame is the foundation for your good nights sleep.
